Phi Chi Theta at SMU: reputation, record and standards
Reputation is a word people use loosely. Here is what the chapter's actually rests on, stated as facts you can check.
Phi Chi Theta's standing at SMU rests on checkable things: a national founding in 1924, the Alpha Gamma Chapter's open policy toward all majors, weekly chapter meetings at the Cox School of Business, guest speakers from Dallas firms, a philanthropy event that raises money for the SPCA, and a published list of firms where brothers have landed. The chapter runs its own recruitment each fall and spring with officers reading every application.
How to read this page: it is the chapter's own opinion, written by current members, and it is not a ranking, a survey result or a statement by Southern Methodist University. Every fact about Phi Chi Theta here can be checked on this site or on the chapter's Instagram. We do not say anything negative about other organizations, and we encourage you to visit every chapter you are considering before you decide.
The record
Phi Chi Theta was founded in 1924 as a coeducational professional business fraternity and has chapters at universities across the country. The Alpha Gamma Chapter at Southern Methodist University is a student organization run by its members. Its colors are purple and gold, its letters are ΦΧΘ, and it posts as @pct.smu. Brothers have gone on to Morgan Stanley, JLL, Visa, Texas Capital Bank, Hilltop Securities, Lockton, USGA, the U.S. Department of Energy, Jackson Walker, Douglas Elliman, Northmarq, D CEO, Brasfield & Gorrie, CyrusOne, Origin Bank and Billabong.
The standards
- Membership by application. There are no bids. Students apply on this site and officers read every application themselves.
- Open to all majors. The chapter does not restrict membership by school or major.
- Weekly meetings with a purpose. Chapter meetings at Cox alternate between internal business and guest speakers from Dallas firms.
- Service. Pie Chi Theta, the annual philanthropy, raises money for the SPCA.
- Coeducational and professional. No house, no hazing, no social rush. Many brothers are also in social Greek life and the two coexist.
What reputation is not
It is not a ranking. Southern Methodist University does not rank or endorse student organizations, and no independent body publishes a ranking of business fraternities at SMU. Anyone who tells you a chapter is officially number one is repeating a rumor. When we say on the why Phi Chi Theta page that we think we are the best fit for most students, that is our opinion, labeled as such, and backed by the facts on this page.
How the chapter protects it
By recruiting for fit rather than volume, which is why officers read applications and follow up personally. By keeping the calendar honest: meetings that are worth attending, a philanthropy that raises real money, and a social calendar that is social rather than mandatory networking. And by publishing where brothers have gone, so the claim is checkable rather than implied. Those placements are the brothers' own achievements and past results do not promise future ones, but a chapter that publishes its record is a chapter that expects to be asked about it.
How to check for yourself
Read the Instagram, which is the chapter's own unedited record of speakers, events and philanthropy. Come to an Info Session during recruitment. Use the scorecard on us and on every other chapter you visit. Reputation should survive that. Ours does, in our view, and you are welcome to test it.
