A scorecard for any business fraternity at SMU

Ten questions, each with a checkable answer. Take it to every Info Session, including ours, and score the chapters yourself.

Quick answer

Score each business fraternity at SMU on ten questions: majors admitted, meeting location, speakers, placement record, who reads applications, philanthropy, time commitment, dues transparency, social calendar and whether you liked the people. Phi Chi Theta's answers are filled in below and marked as self reported. Use the same sheet for every chapter you visit.

How to read this page: Phi Chi Theta's answers below are self reported by the chapter and reflect how the chapter operates; details such as dues and hours change each semester, so confirm them at an Info Session. We have not scored any other organization and we do not publish comparisons of other chapters. Ask each chapter the same questions and record what they tell you.

The ten questions

  1. Which majors can join? Phi Chi Theta at SMU: all majors, from every school on campus.
  2. Where and how often does the chapter meet? Phi Chi Theta: weekly, typically at the Cox School of Business.
  3. Who spoke at the last three meetings? Phi Chi Theta: professionals from Dallas firms come through the semester; Holiner Holdings is one firm that has visited. Ask for the current list.
  4. Where have members landed in the last few years? Phi Chi Theta: Morgan Stanley, JLL, Visa, Texas Capital Bank, Hilltop Securities, Lockton, USGA, the U.S. Department of Energy, Jackson Walker, Douglas Elliman, Northmarq, D CEO, Brasfield & Gorrie, CyrusOne, Origin Bank and Billabong. Individual achievements, not guarantees.
  5. Who reads the applications? Phi Chi Theta: the chapter's officers, personally.
  6. What does the philanthropy raise money for? Phi Chi Theta: Pie Chi Theta supports the SPCA.
  7. How many hours in a normal week and in recruitment week? Phi Chi Theta: a weekly meeting plus some required events; ask at the Info Session for this semester's number.
  8. What are dues and what do they cover? Phi Chi Theta: stated at the Info Session each semester. Any chapter should answer this directly.
  9. What is the social calendar? Phi Chi Theta: a Meet the Brothers night during recruitment, a spring formal and chapter socials through the year.
  10. Did you like the people? Only you can answer this one, and it matters more than the other nine combined.

How to score it

Give each question a zero, one or two. Zero means the chapter could not answer or you did not like the answer. One means fine. Two means the answer was clear and it was what you wanted. A chapter scoring fifteen or more is one you should apply to. Do not compare totals across people, because your weights are not your roommate's.

Why we publish our answers

Because we think they hold up. In our opinion Phi Chi Theta is the best fit for most SMU students who want a professional business fraternity, and the fairest way to say that is to put our answers next to the questions and let you check them. The full argument is on the why Phi Chi Theta page. If another chapter scores higher on your sheet, join it, and we mean that.

What the scorecard leaves out

Prestige, size and age. We left them out on purpose. A large chapter can be a place where nobody knows you. An old chapter can be coasting. Prestige is usually a rumor from someone who joined something else. The ten questions above are the ones that predict whether you will get value, and they are all answerable in one Info Session.

Next step

Print this or keep it on your phone, go to the Info Sessions, and fill it in. The recruitment guide has Phi Chi Theta's dates. If our column wins, the application is short.
