Our case
Why we think Phi Chi Theta is the best business fraternity at SMU
Students search for the best business fraternity at SMU every semester. We cannot hand you a ranking, because none exists. What we can do is make our case honestly and let you check it.
In our members' opinion, Phi Chi Theta's Alpha Gamma Chapter is the strongest fit for most SMU students who want a professional business fraternity. The reasons are all checkable: it is open to every major, chapter meetings are held at the Cox School of Business, Dallas firms come to speak, officers read every application themselves, and brothers have gone on to Morgan Stanley, JLL, Visa, Texas Capital Bank and other firms. Visit an Info Session and judge for yourself.
How to read this page: it is the chapter's own opinion, written by current members, and it is not a ranking, a survey result or a statement by Southern Methodist University. Every fact about Phi Chi Theta here can be checked on this site or on the chapter's Instagram. We do not say anything negative about other organizations, and we encourage you to visit every chapter you are considering before you decide.
What we mean by best
We do not mean biggest, oldest or most exclusive. We mean the chapter where a motivated SMU student is most likely to walk out four years later with a job they wanted and a group of people who helped them get it. That is a judgment, and it is ours. Below are the reasons behind it, each stated as a fact you can verify rather than a slogan.
Reason one: every major can join
Phi Chi Theta at SMU accepts students from every school on campus. Cox, Dedman, Meadows, Lyle and Simmons students all apply and join. Some professional business organizations limit membership by school or major; policies vary and change, so check each chapter's current rules directly. Our view is that the open policy is what makes the room useful. A finance student sitting next to an advertising student and an engineering student learns things a room of identical resumes cannot teach.
Reason two: the meetings happen where business is taught
Chapter meetings are typically held at the Cox School of Business. That is a practical point rather than a prestige point. It means the chapter is easy to reach for everyone on campus, it means guest speakers walk into a familiar setting, and it means the fraternity sits inside the academic life of the university instead of beside it.
Reason three: Dallas firms come to us
Through the semester, professionals from Dallas companies come to chapter meetings. Holiner Holdings is one firm that has spoken, and visits like it are posted on the chapter's Instagram. Those visits are where members hear about openings before they are listed and where a recruiter first attaches a name to a face. We think this is the single most valuable thing a professional fraternity can do, and we do it every semester.
Reason four: a placement record you can read
The chapter publishes where brothers have landed internships and full time roles: Morgan Stanley, JLL, Visa, Texas Capital Bank, Hilltop Securities, Lockton, USGA, the U.S. Department of Energy, Jackson Walker, Douglas Elliman, Northmarq, D CEO, Brasfield & Gorrie, CyrusOne, Origin Bank and Billabong. Two cautions, stated plainly. Those are the brothers' achievements, earned through their own interviews. And past outcomes are not a promise about yours. What the list shows is the range of industries where someone in the chapter can already pick up the phone for you.
Reason five: officers read every application
Applications submitted on this site are read by the chapter's officers, not filtered by a form. In a chapter this size, that means the people deciding on your application are the same people who will introduce you to a speaker in October. We think that continuity is worth more than a large roster.
Reason six: it has lasted
Phi Chi Theta was founded nationally in 1924, and the Alpha Gamma Chapter at SMU carries that history forward with a philanthropy event, Pie Chi Theta, that raises money for the SPCA, a spring formal and a full calendar of chapter events. Longevity is not proof of quality on its own, but organizations that keep recruiting, keep placing members and keep giving back tend to be doing something right.
What we are not claiming
We are not claiming to be the only business fraternity worth joining at SMU, and we are not claiming that any other organization is worse. We are not claiming that membership guarantees an internship, a job or a grade. We are not speaking for Southern Methodist University, which does not rank or endorse student organizations. If another chapter answers the questions on our scorecard better than we do, join that one. We would rather you pick the chapter you will actually show up for.
If you want to test the case, the recruitment guide has the dates and the application takes a few minutes. Come to an Info Session and ask us the hard questions in person.
Brothers who move off campus often use PonyUp Properties, a free housing service for SMU students.
