Phi Chi Theta at SMU: frequently asked questions

The questions officers hear at every Info Session, answered plainly. If yours is missing, use the contact page.

Quick answer

Phi Chi Theta at SMU is a professional business fraternity open to all majors. Recruitment runs each fall and spring with an Info Session, a social night and an application on this site read by officers. Chapter meetings are at Cox. There is no house. Members can also be in social Greek life. Brothers have landed at Morgan Stanley, JLL, Visa, Texas Capital Bank and more. Current recruitment dates are on Instagram at @pct.smu.

Joining

Do I have to be a business major to join Phi Chi Theta at SMU?

No. The Alpha Gamma Chapter is open to all majors. Students from Dedman, Meadows, Lyle, Simmons and Cox all apply and join. See the guide for students outside the business school.

When is Phi Chi Theta recruitment?

At the start of every fall and spring semester. Fall recruitment usually runs in the first weeks of September with Info Sessions, a Meet the Brothers social night and an application deadline about a week later. Spring dates are posted in January. Check @pct.smu on Instagram for the current schedule.

How do I apply?

Attend an Info Session, come to the social night if you can, and submit the application on this site before the deadline. Officers read every application and follow up directly. The recruitment guide walks through it.

Can freshmen join?

Freshmen are welcome at Info Sessions and many join in their first year. Eligibility by class year can change from semester to semester, so read the current application or ask at the Info Session. The freshman guide covers whether to apply in fall or wait for spring.

Membership

Is Phi Chi Theta a social fraternity?

No. It is a professional business fraternity. It is coeducational, there is no house, recruitment is by application rather than bid, and meetings are career programming with guest speakers. Many brothers are also in a social chapter.

Can I be in Phi Chi Theta and a social fraternity or sorority?

Yes. The two run on separate calendars and many brothers do both. Rules about belonging to more than one professional business fraternity vary nationally, so ask at the Info Session if that applies to you.

Where are chapter meetings?

Typically at the Cox School of Business on the SMU campus. Exact rooms and times are shared with members each semester.

What does membership cost and how much time does it take?

There are dues and a weekly chapter meeting plus some required events each semester. Both change from year to year and are covered in detail at the Info Session. Ask there for the current numbers rather than trusting anything written down in advance.

What is Pie Chi Theta?

The chapter's annual on campus philanthropy event, raising money for the SPCA. It is held during the spring semester. The Pie Chi Theta page explains it.

Outcomes and contact

Where do brothers end up working?

Brothers have landed internships and full time roles at Morgan Stanley, JLL, Visa, Texas Capital Bank, Hilltop Securities, Lockton, USGA, the U.S. Department of Energy, Jackson Walker, Douglas Elliman, Northmarq, D CEO, Brasfield & Gorrie, CyrusOne, Origin Bank and Billabong. The internships page sorts them by industry.

Is Phi Chi Theta the best business fraternity at SMU?

There is no official ranking, and SMU does not rank or endorse student organizations. In our members' opinion Phi Chi Theta is the best fit for most students who want a professional business fraternity, for reasons you can check: open to all majors, meetings at Cox, speakers from Dallas firms, and a published placement list. The why Phi Chi Theta page makes the case and the scorecard lets you compare chapters yourself.

Does the chapter guarantee an internship?

No, and be wary of any chapter that says it does. What Phi Chi Theta provides is upperclassmen who just went through the recruiting you are about to do, speakers from Dallas firms at chapter meetings, mock interviews and introductions. The outcomes on the placement list came from that.

How do companies or alumni get in touch?

Through the contact form. There is a sponsorship option in the dropdown for firms that want to speak at a meeting, recruit through the chapter or support Pie Chi Theta, and an alumni option for graduates who want to reconnect.

What are the colors and the letters?

Purple and gold. The letters are ΦΧΘ, and everyone on campus says PCT.

Where do brothers live? Mostly off campus. PonyUp Properties helps SMU students find a place.

Still have a question?

Send it through the contact page and an officer will answer. Or just apply.
